Before we get started, there are a few important notes on cueing that will ensure your classes are inclusive and relevant for all:
Far too many Barre classes continue to use language like, “Put on your highest heels, ladies!” While we’d never stop anyone from wearing a fabulous pair of heels, this type of cue won’t work for everyone. An option like, “Stand up on your toes, as if you’re trying to reach something on the very top shelf,” will land a little lighter.
- Use body-inclusive language.
“Make space between your lower back and the floor,” or “Suck your belly button to your spine,” are cues used frequently, however they can be unconsciously size exclusive. Remember that your clients will be of all shapes and sizes (just as we like them), and your cues should be relevant for all. “Rock your hips back and forward until you find your neutral,” is a better option, as is, “Imagine you are bringing your belly button and your spine closer together.”
- Remember, language matters.
Never assume anything about the clients in your class, and always remember that words matter. Girls, thigh gap, summer bodies, calorie burning … We can all collectively agree these terms were left behind at the turn of the century, yes?
