1. Have Fun With Classes
Remember when you first fell in love with Pilates or Barre? Chances are, it wasn’t in front of Netflix, but within a class environment. So, get back out there! The fastest way to gather ideas and to feel lit up and inspired about your own journey, is to step into the shoes (or socks) of a client. Don’t feel confined by the style you teach, but explore lots of different styles to fill up your inspiration cup. From spin classes, to yoga flows, to dance sequences, to bootcamps, go have some fun!
2. Embrace Continuous Learning
In a field where innovation is the name of the game, staying ahead of the curve is paramount. Commit yourself to continuous learning by attending workshops, conferences and online courses. Seek out certifications that expand your knowledge and expertise, whether it's in specialised Pilates techniques, anatomy, or the latest props and sequences. A thirst for knowledge will not only keep you inspired but also make you a trusted resource for your clients.
3. Master the Art of Communication
As a Pilates instructor, your ability to effectively communicate with your clients is crucial. In 2023, successful instructors go beyond just giving cues; they create an experience that makes everyone feel welcome. Develop your verbal and non-verbal skills to convey instructions clearly, motivate your clients, and provide valuable feedback. Doing this in an inclusive way is key. Educate yourself on positive language (we have a great video from our expert trainer Liana on this in TLC if you need some tips), research what motivation looks like for different people, and adapt your communication style accordingly. Remember, communication is a two-way street, so be an active listener and adapt your teaching style to suit individual needs.
4. Embrace Technology
The digital era has revolutionized the fitness industry – particularly since the pandemic – and Pilates is no exception. Embrace technology to enhance your instruction and reach a broader audience. If you teach in a studio, is it time to try online teaching to explore what’s out there? Leverage social media platforms, create engaging content, and establish your online presence. Explore virtual training options, offering live or recorded classes, and connect with clients around the globe. By harnessing the power of technology, you can expand your reach and build a thriving Pilates community.
5. Personalise Your Planning
In 2023, successful Pilates instructors understand that one size does not fit all. Customise your classes to not only meet the unique goals and needs of each client, but to make them as inclusive and welcoming as possible. Whenever you can, take a peek at who has booked into your classes, and tailor your programming accordingly. Perhaps you know that you have a class full of corporate workers who are experiencing stress, and could do with an extra juicy savasana? Or maybe you have a postnatal specific class with clients who could benefit from some careful abdominal modifications. Being planned, personalised and considered in your class planning will ensure your class is memorable and your clients keep coming back for more.
6. Diversify Your Offering
Who says you need to stick to a particular formula in your classes? If you’ve been inspired by a recent trend or there’s a sequence that lights you up, incorporate it into your classes! Whether you’re using a prop in a unique way (ball under the heel of the foot, anyone?) or are inspired to try a few vinyasa sequences at the barre, creativity and diversification will keep your clients (quite literally) on their toes, and your classes more successful as your community begin to expect this type of creativity from you.
7. Cultivate a Supportive Community
Building a strong and supportive community is a hallmark of successful Pilates instructors in 2023. When we’ve all been starved of connection – and spend so much of our time online – your studio space can be the biggest point of community in your clients’ lives. So, create a warm and welcoming environment where your clients feel valued and supported - not only on their wellness journey – but in their lives. Foster connections between clients, encourage them to cheer each other on, and celebrate their achievements. A strong community not only enhances client retention but also generates positive word-of-mouth, attracting new clients to your studio. Successful? We think so!
8. Prioritise Self-Care
As you guide others towards their wellness goals, don't forget to prioritise your own self-care. You know what they say about empty cups … In 2023, successful Pilates instructors understand that their own wellbeing directly impacts their ability to inspire others. Practice what you preach by incorporating movement into your own routine, nurturing your mental and physical health, and seeking balance in all aspects of your life. By leading by example, you'll not only inspire your clients but also ensure longevity in your career.
